Body Mapping activity led by artist Olga Lah, HUB Mid-Atlantic Regional Gathering (Washington DC, Sep 12, 2025)

Ministry in the City HUB Update, September 2025

Dear HUB friends,

September has come and gone in a flash! We are now in the thick of things here in New York City and beyond.

On September 12, 2025, we hosted our Mid-Atlantic Regional Gathering at Washington City Church of the Brethren, with pastors, artists, theological educators, and ministry leaders from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC. Artist Olga Lah led a body mapping activity (featured above), and we had rich time of sharing, reflecting, walking, and praying for Capitol Hill and our respective ministry communities and cities. It was the beginning of new relationships as well as deepening of existing connections. And it wrapped up with the Creative Community Care exhibit opening celebration. See more details below.

Finally, we look ahead in preparation for the Fall Convening in November 2025. Registration is now closed, and follow-up details are being sent to those who have confirmed participation. We are excited to pilot a facilitation workshop and curate resources from the HUB network to share.

We love hearing your updates and continue to share them here, on our HUB website, and on social media. We are praying with and for you as you continue in the good work you have been called to.

Peace, Maria and Mark (with the HUB team)

Highlights
Affinity Working Group (Seasons) Writing Retreat
NET-MAKING
This month the HUB-team led Affinity Working Group (Seasons) focused on women leaders, narrative theology, and and ministry seasons met together for a culminating three-day writing retreat. We thank God for a fruitful and restful time, and pray that the Spirit would continue to work through these eight women, that they will have more moments to be refreshed in the midst of their work. Their writing journey will continue for another year, though in a different form. We plan for another round of HUB-team led Affinity Working Groups to begin in late 2025 / early 2026.
Exploring Church Spaces Field Trip
GRANT STEWARDING
This summer, the HUB grantee project, Exploring Church Spaces (Emmanuel Gospel Center - EGC), hosted their second field trip at Second Church in Dorchester, focused on historic preservation and creative community use. Thirteen church and community leaders participated in a day of learning, reflection, and connection. They explored a range of church spaces at different stages of development. Two guest experts: Tony Lopes of Historic Boston Inc. and Jeffrey Gonyeau shared from their knowledge and experience. Click here to read more about this trip.
Creative Community Care DC opens
STORY-TELLING
The Creative Community Care exhibit opened in DC on September 12, 2025, with a curator talk and artists Olga Lah and Naomi Lawrence sharing about their work. A community crochet workshop was led by Naomi Lawrence the next morning. This week the exhibit will close with a panel conversation, Community Care in Continued Crisis, on October 2, 2025.

We look forward to hearing more from the curatorial team and artists in our “Light Breaking Out” podcast series in fall 2025 and spring 2026. The season will begin next month so keep an eye out for the episode drop.
Core Practices for Beloved Community
RESOURCE SHARING
At our recent September Food + Fellowship, HUB grantee Rev. Kelly Fasset shared with us “Core Practices for a Beloved Community.” These practices were developed by the UniteBoston team and have been instrumental for being peacemakers in this period of division, hostility, and violence. It is often difficult to see one another clearly when there is so much that seems to divide us but this practice calls us to reaffirm the truth that before God, “I am beloved. You are beloved. We are beloved.”
