August 2025 Update

Dear HUB friends,

As we come to the end of the summer and look to a new ministry and academic year, we hope that you have had some time for respite and renewal.

In a couple of weeks, we will host the HUB Mid-Atlantic Regional Gathering at the Washington City Church of the Brethren in Washington DC. We will gather ministry and community leaders, theological educators, and artists together for a time of sharing, learning, and praying together.

We’ll walk the streets and pray for our nation and its capital, and celebrate the opening of the ‘Creative Community Care’ exhibit on its fifth stop. We appreciate your prayers for this time together, particularly for the ways we can make space for relationship-building, reflection, and listening in this moment.

Invitations for the Fall Convening in November have been sent out. Please use the RSVP form to indicate if you are joining us by September 5, 2025. In particular, please let us know if you will opt in for the Wednesday afternoon facilitation workshop or have a resource to share with others. This will help us to prepare to welcome you to New York City.

More to come next month! Stay in touch!

Peace, Maria and Mark (with the HUB team)

Highlights
Affinity Working Groups Update
NET-MAKING
This past year we piloted two HUB team-led affinity working groups focused on youth leaders (featured here at their NYC retreat in April 2025) and women leaders in seasons of ministry. We have had a rich time of learning and connection. The women’s group will wrap up next month with a three-day writing retreat in Miami. We look forward to gathering groups for another round in the upcoming year.
Puentes Collective Writing Retreat
GRANT STEWARDING
Puentes Collective hosted a writing retreat this spring in Paso Robles (CA). As the group visited different sites–spending time reflecting, writing, and sharing–the purpose was to connect participants with the surroundings of the physical space and what it meant to be rooted in their spiritual practices.

STORY-TELLING
HUB co-director Maria Liu Wong has been visiting, listening to, and documenting the stories of grantees (eg. the intergenerational storytelling team at Toronto Chinese Mennonite Church featured here). She is working with HUB teammate Norman Yung to produce short videos to share and highlight the amazing ways God is at work in cities across the US and Canada. We’ll keep you posted on release dates for the first round.
Recalculating Route
RESOURCE SHARING
“Recalculating Route” is a community arts activity that helps us to see each other’s differing perspectives as we experience the same place and share images in response to word or phrase prompts. This idea was adapted from the work of artist Ofri Cnaani (experienced during a School for Visual Arts’ City as Site residency).

Creative Community Care Traveling Exhibition Washington D.C.
September 12, 2025
Creative Community Care: Artists Respond to Pandemic Times is an interactive group exhibit exploring concerns and questions arising from COVID-19 and racial violence at the intersection of the arts, learning, faith, and the city. Eight artists adapted their creative practices to process their own experiences with grief and memory, relationships as neighbors and friends, and roles as parents and caregivers. Their works invite us to consider the relevance of the arts for healing and dream of new ways we might care for our communities.
