Grantee Highlight: Noema Marinho

Noemia is a self-taught artist who transforms discarded materials like milk cartons into art, reflecting her thrifty mindset and Brazilian heritage. She addresses environmental issues and gender dynamics, highlighting strength that emerges from challenging circumstances.

This summer, her project, The Gleaning Project, debuted Coverings: An Exploration of Plastic, Fashion, and Humanity in Chelsea, showcasing over a dozen upcycled purses and large-scale installations made from reclaimed plastic bags. Created in collaboration with eight participants from partner organizations, the exhibition drew a diverse audience and sparked dialogue on sustainability and the social value of art.
