Seeding H.O.P.E. through a Garden of Eden in the Homewood neighborhood

On April 7th and 20th, the H.O.P.E. Alliance partnered with the MUI for two events. The first was a lunch and learn gathering for the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary community in partnership with Garfield Community Farm (GCF). The two GCF speakers educated in-person and online lunch and learn attendees on the role and importance of urban green spaces and gardens in the mitigation of violence in cities, and encouraged identifying ways to initiate, embrace, and support green spaces throughout their own neighborhoods. Building on what was learned in the lunch, the second event was held in collaboration with the MUI’s Annual Day-of-Service on April 20th. A group of nearly twenty volunteers worked with H.O.P.E. Alliance partner, Rev. Mary Washington-Hornezes and SAI Green Spaces (Isaiah 61) to bring her vision of a Garden of Eden to life on a small parcel of land she owns in the Homewood Neighborhood. With guidance from the Director of Ecology and Design of Garfield Community Farm, the MUI’s H.O.P.E. Alliance volunteers built raised beds and planted vegetables, planted two apple trees, blackberry bushes, and native flowers. MUI Day Volunteers have been invited to continue supporting our H.O.P.E. Alliance partner by volunteering at the green space location on weekends when possible.
