Gleaning Project

Noemia Marinho New York, NY

2024-25: The Gleaning Project, in partnership with Storefront Church’s Neighbor space, aims to empower marginalized individuals through art while fostering environmental stewardship. Using discarded materials, we provide weekly art workshops where underserved participants are hired as artist assistants to create art from recycled materials. Through this process, participants find purpose, healing, and community. Our workshops culminate in art showcases, where artwork is sold, and the proceeds are reinvested into the project. This initiative contributes to personal growth and provides financial support and social connection to the participants while contributing to the church’s vision of renewal and justice in the communities along the High Line.

2023-24: The Gleaning Project is bringing renewal to marginalized neighbors and caring for the Earth through art. Through a partnership with Storefront Church, the team is focusing on the communities along the High Line. They collect discarded materials such as plastic bags, used tea bags, and aluminum foil. These materials serve as the canvas for our artwork, and they employ and train under-served individuals as artist assistants. The collected materials undergo a creative metamorphosis. They are meticulously cleaned, cut, crocheted, sewed, braided, and transformed into unique art pieces. This transformative process not only produces art but also fosters a sense of community, purpose, and healing among neighbors. All the completed art pieces are showcased, marketed, and sold, and the profits generated are reinvested back into the project, fueling our mission and sustainable growth.

I pray for justice in a city where inequality is so stark, and I also ask for compassion for those who are unable to care for themselves.
